Zos Speaks!
by Kenneth & Steffi Grant

Encounters with Austin Osman Spare

Over fifty years ago, Kenneth and Steffi Grant met the artist Austin Osman Spare. A mutual passion for weird art brought them together at a time when Spare, in the final decade of his life, had turned again to writing about his other passion – the occult.

In his younger days, Spare had laid the foundation of a uniquely individualistic system of magical evocation which dispensed with the more ritualistic approach. A lifetime of practice, since his early books were published, had gone to the ripening of his ideas and techniques, and he was busy producing a definitive statement of his philosophy of the subconscious.

Two years previously, Grant had been staying with Aleister Crowley, the renowned occultist, and Spare's work had therefore a direct and instant appeal. The Grants were thus able to share in the making of Spare's last book.

Zos Speaks! is an account of their meetings with Spare, and contains numerous letters of the period, providing details of Spare's system. They give a unique insight into his method of working with Familiar Spirits, 'Delphic Oracles', and the strange formulae of the Witches' Sabbath which Spare claimed to have attended on many occasions. This book also contains Spare's last great literary works: The Logomachy, The Zoetic Grimoire and The Living Word.
