Jan Fries has brought us a very good book on runes. It explains how one goes about becoming a Helrunar, one who makes rune magick. The roots of this magical language can be found in the ancient pagan beliefs of our ancestors who built many thousands of stones circles, long barrows and dolmens throughout ancient Europe. These same symbols and techniques were used by the Pagan Celts and Germans.
The author covers everything from early history through to the various uses of runes for meditation, chant and trancework, healing and divination, and he does so with a great sense of humor. The result is a thoroughly enjoyable read that comes over as being unique in its approach. The rune meanings are extensive, but the author leaves room for his readers to think for themselves in this regard also. Jan Fries is not only informative, he encourages further experimentation by beginner and scholar alike to arrive at a more personal view.
Illustrated throughout with the author's strange and absorbing artwork, this is one of the best rune books of the present day.
